A DAY AFTER THE SPEECH, NANO IS SINCERE! MOST ALBANIANS BELIEVE HIM Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano has recently reiterated that he enjoys the trust and support of the majority of Albanians. The speech he delivered in parliament was apparently the next test, at a delicate moment. Until Sunday, Nano was the Albanian leader who had shown his citizens how to forgive by not seeking revenge. But Sunday’s arrest of six former officials in the Berisha administration set Albanians against one another. Albanians were naturally thrown into turmoil. Actions, whether carefully considered or carried out in a fit of hatred, ranged from “a cycle of revenge” to “the deliberate elimination of the opposition.” Tuesday was the turning point. Nano showed the Albanian people that he had no intention of taking revenge on anyone. “The only ‘revenge’ that I and the members of the coalition can allow ourselves is to fulfil our responsibilities for building a new Albania,” the Prime Minister said. Was he sincere? Most of the people we asked yesterday, by phone or face-to-face in the streets of Vlorë, Durrës, Shkodër, Korçë, Elbasan, Gjirokastër and Sarandë, said they believed the Prime Minister. They saw as his foremost qualities his sincerity and courage in responding to serious accusations, which even struck at the very core of his government: coexistence. Secondly, they said, for the first time an Albanian leader was speaking completely openly to his nation, being transparent even about the imprisonment of “his opponents”—the worst reputation of any kind of ruler in Albania. That was enough, it seems, to win their trust. Not to earn applause for the arrests, but to build a state with equal and independent powers. Almost everyone, in their opinions yesterday, noted the first few centimetres of progress toward becoming a builder of the state. As they hurried to express their trust, they were also quick to ask for something in return: “We support him, but Nano must build the State.” PAGES 2, 3
