TIRANA—Petro Koçi has announced his resignation from the post of Minister of Public Order.
A hastily called press conference was held yesterday evening, at which Koçi made his surprise announcement. The decision to resign appears to have been very difficult for him. This was clear when Koçi appeared before the journalists looking tired. Tense relations with Prime Minister Majko, repeated attacks in the press, accusations of mafia structures within the Ministry of Public Order, interference in the appointments of senior officials in the ministry, and the rejection of the Public Order Minister’s candidates were also the main problems that led Koçi to announce his resignation. “Judging by my relations with Prime Minister Majko over the past few months, by developments within the Socialist Party—developments that have been contracted and offer no solutions—and also taking into account some recent positions taken by the Albanian press, I have decided to ask the President of the Republic and the Socialist Party Parliamentary Group to accept my resignation from the post of Minister of Public Order,” Minister Koçi said at the beginning of his press statement.
