On 24 August, in Skanderbeg Square, Sali Berisha addressed Blerim Çela, Safet Zhulali, Halit Shamata, Bujar Rama, and Sokol Mulosmani with these words: “I tell the political prisoners”—he said of the former officials arrested two days earlier—“that one of them will die for you, but will set you free.” 18 days later, Azem Hajdari was killed. Two days after the murder, Berisha sought power by force of arms. A few months later, the “political prisoners” were released.
