After the removal of his immunity by Parliament on 27 July 1993, on 3 April 1994 Fatos Nano was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment, a decision that remained unchanged both at the Court of Appeal on 26 May 1994 and at Cassation on 28 July 1994. From the amnesty of 28 November 1994, he benefited from a reduction of 3 years, 6 months and 21 days. He also benefited from a further two-year reduction on 20 March 1995. Thus, counting the time he is already serving, he still has 3 years and 6 months in prison left. Nano tried to find openings in the new Penal Code in order to be released, but he was unable to obtain this release in the Tepelenë and Tirana courts.
