Monarchy or Republic
A referendum on the form of government, the first step toward building a rule-of-law state
In the climate of political constructions and counter-constructions, no one was tied to a single form of government, whether republic or monarchy; it was necessary to consolidate it and no longer take anything for granted.
Thinking about the governing link of our country, two decrees have been issued. The head of state has set the date of the referendum, and both sides treat this issue as extremely important. This question should not be left to others alone; it concerns democracy and the conscience of all Albanians. Fatos Nano and Sali Berisha are the two major figures in the political developments of recent years. They represent two different alternatives for the country’s development: two roads to the future. In my opinion, if there is a moment to ask the people by referendum, it is precisely the one we are living through now. The two main political forces in the country should rally their membership around the referendum and explain to Albanians why they should answer it. Otherwise, like a country with crumbling pillars, if the next government is not careful, the building of a republican, rule-of-law state will be endangered. Take, for example, the right of construction, which in its foundations is based on something built over a long period of time and by the development of that period. Its purpose was to bring logic and reason to the fore; yet the result of these concepts was a stronger, more consolidated society. Since we have gained a right, we must be clear about how the referendum will be decided, whether it will be organized as a single question: republic or monarchy. None of this would matter if we failed to uphold democracy. Likewise, if it is to be taken into account, we must strengthen the political system and not let it fade. A republic, in the sense of the state structure, is also a parliamentary system. This is not only about the personalization of leaders, but about the way the government is chosen as a whole. And that is the path that must be taken. As a regime platform, it excludes no political force, no political party. This is a debate that must be conducted openly and with arguments. The Democratic League of Kosovo is considered legitimate because it represents the Albanian people of Kosovo? The demand for a referendum must come with a sound basis and a clear strategy, not with slogans and political declarations. Perhaps a referendum is useful as a way to clarify the future. The newspaper "Republika" is pushing in this direction; it does not seek to impose an opinion, but to raise questions. The newspaper "Republika" has launched this new column: "Family Notices," in which all such developments in the path of family reform or their conclusion in this way will be presented. All of this will appear in this column.
