Government: Program being prepared, confidence vote tomorrow
. Even today, the Government newly formed by Meksi will not go to Parliament. This was confirmed by Fatos Bejo, deputy chairman of the PD parliamentary group, who yesterday afternoon, after the end of the Assembly’s plenary session, said that there was a 99% chance Meksi would not come to Parliament today either. With the same degree of certainty, Bejo set tomorrow as the day for the confidence vote on Meksi’s new cabinet. On the other hand, the number two among PD deputies said that Parliament is working to establish its structures and, in this context, is ready to receive the Government and discuss its program. Today the deputies will meet in the morning to discuss the committees, and in a plenary session when it is announced—the Government, too, is not sitting idle. Meksi is preparing his second program for governing Albania. During this time he has also received the views of other parties, among them the Republican Party, which has identified such important issues as emigration, tourism, property, privatization, education, etc. The Prime Minister said that he had listened to Godo’s proposals and remembered them, and that whether or not he has taken them into account will become clear when he sits down to write the program. This is precisely the time for Meksi to take the Republican leaders into account, all the more so since the Secretary General of the Council of Ministers he heads, the Republican Arian Madhi, is also in the same building. Nevertheless, it seems everything will be decided tomorrow, when Aleksandër Meksi and his ministers appear before the people’s representatives to seek a vote of confidence. In any case, the law gives the Prime Minister up to ten days after his appointment—that is, until the end of the week.
Pogradec police commissioner killed
. The Chief of the Police Commissariat of Pogradec, Agim Gjyrezi, was killed on Monday evening by unidentified individuals, according to official sources at the Albanian Ministry of the Interior. The killing, according to a police officer, [text unclear], a police chief—especially given that the scene of the incident was the city of Pogradec, which is not known for high levels of crime. According to sources at the Ministry of the Interior, intensive investigations have begun. The killing of a police officer in Pogradec took place at 22:50. An unknown person, the same source reports, fired from behind through a café where the police chief was drinking coffee, and a bullet from an automatic burst caused his death. The killer fled quickly and even today nothing is known about him, but it is thought that the motives for the crime are connected to Mr. Gjyrezi’s position, police sources said. The tragic killing has attracted attention because no police chief is known to have ever been killed in Albania, all the more so intensive investigations have begun, all roads linking Pogradec with other cities have been blocked, and strict checks are being carried out at all border crossings in the country. The 31-year-old Agim Gjyrezi, originally from Shkodra, was appointed police chief in Pogradec on August 1 of last year and was considered one of the most talented and courageous members of the Albanian police. Yesterday the deceased’s body was sent off with honors from the city of Pogradec to be buried in his birthplace, the city of Shkodra.
Journalists Poor in Their Vocabulary
How rich is the vocabulary journalists use in the articles they publish every day in daily newspapers? This is the main subject of a survey conducted using a model brought from England by a group of journalists.
A computer system used to compile crossword puzzles published daily in newspapers was used to organize the survey. Seven journalists were selected for each of seven different areas of newspaper coverage. In general, those surveyed were reporters, who also carry the greatest burden of providing the daily information published in newspapers. For all 49 journalists, between 10 and 20 articles were archived, containing a total of up to 12,000 words. In the end, the computer selected the words used frequently and found that the journalists surveyed use between 600 and 1,800 words in their articles. This points to the poverty of their journalistic vocabulary and the construction of news stories using the same words. But even this number does not represent complete words, since according to the computer’s logic, almost 30% of the words consist of a single letter and 10% of two letters. According to the survey, reporters are slightly richer in vocabulary than journalists who hold editorial management positions. The main point is that all the journalists are poor in the wealth of words in the Albanian language. This is a first survey, and it is understood that it has its limitations. It was also quite difficult to organize, since many reporters did not agree to hand over disks containing 10 to 20 articles. Perhaps one reason the survey has its limitations is that, although several foreign media organizations operate in our country, none of them sponsored a survey that would have been far more valuable than some of the training sessions currently being held.
STATEMENT
