Kosovo must not watch the turmoil in Serbia as a spectator

Milošević came to power waving the flag of Greater Serbia, but later moderated his increasingly harsh and cunning approach toward Kosovo. Vuk Drashkoviçi, who today appears to be the opposition leader, began his political career in the 1990s as an extremist of Serbian nationalism. Even if one assumes that a change of power in Belgrade will democratize Serbia, the prospects for Kosovo remain unclear, as long as today’s opposition continues along those four paths of Serbia. What is happening in Serbia remains simply a conflict among Serbs. Kosovo can bring about change. This is essential: Kosovo must strongly assert its legitimate rights without letting such an extraordinary opportunity slip away. The struggle for democracy and the right to political self-determination must undoubtedly include the Albanians, the only people who remain occupied in Yugoslavia, while being — Yugoslavia. Page 3

10 police officers guard a cow

The thieves are released, the cow is in a cell Rare but true. The police post near Tirana’s Central Hospital currently has a ... cow in its possession. The cow has become a full-fledged member of the police collective for the past two weeks. The representative of the animal breed that has traditionally served humankind as a source of food came into custody following the arrest of two young men who had stolen the cow for profit. Caught in the act by the officers of this police post, near which the theft had taken place, the two young men admitted their guilt but were unable to specify who owned the animal. In the absence of a complaint, the two thieves were released after spending a week in a cell. But while the two young men returned to their homes, the stolen cow could not do the same, especially since its owner, apparently having lost hope of finding his animal again, had not come looking for it. Since the cow had no way to tell the police itself where its home was, the police staff unanimously decided that the cow should live with the officers until its owner remembered to file a report. The cow has been living in complete harmony with its new owners for about two weeks, and during this time it has been performing its duties as a cow very well. Apparently accustomed to farm work, the police find it quite difficult to provide the cow with the care it needs. The cow grazes every day under police supervision, while one of the officers looks after milking her. We tried to put our microphone in front of the cow too, to ask where she felt better, at home or among the police officers, but, as we said, she could not speak. Nevertheless, she seems content.
