The PS KPD meeting ended, leaving chaos behind. The Socialists were unable to determine who was chiefly responsible for 20 October. The Presidium managed to survive, despite the rumors about its future. The protest against the Presidium ended up as much ado about nothing. Only 18 people signed the pledge against the Presidium. Far too few for a large KPD. In this bitterly cold winter, the Socialists cannot figure out who wrecked them in summer and autumn. Although they used proper names and sent telegrams and petitions from every corner, they lacked the strength and civic courage to change the Socialist shack built at the last congress. The bravehearts did not rise up. It seems they submitted to the instinct of adaptation. As always in such cases, the Socialists are quick to tell the newspapers that they have a strong, unblemished party. The Socialists’ genetic fear of transparency has turned the politicians of the ex-communist left into unparalleled hypocrites. This year was a genuine crisis for the PS. For them, there seems to be little hope of recovering. The PS has been reduced to a ruin, no longer able to play the role of a giant opposition. The dinosaurs have lost their teeth. Exhausted, divided by internal quarrels, without people and aged under the power of the “republican” caps, the PS is no longer the opposition’s closest rival: it has become a party like all the others, quite capable of being challenged even by left-wing parties with only four years of history. The latest KPD meeting seems to have left things as they were, fitting dentures to the teeth the PS lost in the last elections.
