Rallies and counter-rallies in Tirana. Politics instead of pyramid schemes
The opposition is also responsible for the pyramid schemes
. It is a familiar practice in a country’s political and economic crises that, as elections draw nearer, political forces rush to call for accountability from those who brought the country to collapse. Naturally, those most often in the firing line of accusations are the people in power and the political force administering it. If we were to apply the same logic to the way the crisis that emerged after the collapse of the pyramid schemes in Albania is being handled, it would be absurd to absolve the Government and the Democratic Party of the heavy responsibility they bear for this situation. On the other hand, bearing in mind that the pyramid-scheme crisis did not arise in a vacuum or overnight, more than anyone else, all the senior state and government bodies that have led the country in recent years are to blame for it. In this context, the “Meksi 1” Cabinet cannot be excluded, nor can the Parliament of the previous legislature. It is convenient to be in opposition when the Government seems to have lost its footing, and preferable to take on the mantle of savior, even saying: If I were in government, things would never have reached this point. But such a claim would carry weight if even once a wise and honest opposition party had raised its voice from the platforms that gave it that opportunity. The Socialists and Ceka’s allies, along with Gjini’s Social Democrats, have had the opportunity to do so more than once. Considering that pyramid schemes were legal in Albania when the aforementioned parties were represented in Parliament, their failure to speak out against them during the latest election campaigns shows that either they approved of this phenomenon or had no concrete alternative to avert their catastrophe; they feared losing votes more than the enormous losses that ultimately resulted in Albanian politics and the economy. It is shameful now to play the savior while also playing the card of supposed solutions. Supporting the protests is one thing; pretending that you recognized the danger of pyramid schemes long ago is another. Nevertheless, this time too, as on many other occasions, the Socialists and their allies are exploiting one of the PD’s many and greatest mistakes rather than relying on their own abilities.
