February 20 does not belong only to the DP
Enough of every form of totalitarianism!
Six years ago, on February 20, 1991, Albanians, united as rarely before, toppled the statue of Enver Hoxha, the symbol of communism in Albania. February 20 remained in history as the day the totalitarian system was toppled and a new cult, democracy, was established.
system was toppled and a new cult, democracy, was established.
But today, in ’97, it seems as though Albanians have gone back six years. The street protests, demands for the Government to be toppled, the difficult economic situation (after the collapse of the pyramid schemes), harsh criticism of government officials’ corruption, violence and destruction—in short, this entire charged atmosphere—seem like an enormous shadow that ’91 casts over ’97.
The difficult situation in Albania today is the consequence of the Albanian political class, of its incompetence, demagoguery and hypocrisy. It is a mockery of democratic ideas and of the people’s faith and willingness to sacrifice for better days.
Unlike six years ago, Albanians are more divided than ever into different political camps, where the parties do nothing but foment intolerance and block dialogue.
For six years running, the party in power has not tired of shifting the blame onto others, while the former communists miss no opportunity to taunt them and amplify the governing party’s faults in order to discredit democracy itself.
Never in these six years has the government been so close to surrendering power.
Never in these six years have the former communists been so close to taking power.
Never in these six years has the demagogic frenzy of the PS and PD been so hypocritical.
Never in these six years have the people been so mocked, deceived, dispossessed and endangered by being used in political games.
And yet, these six years have been a great lesson for Albanians.
The experience they have gained has shown them that the only path they must follow is democracy, the consolidation of its institutions, and not a return to communism. They were told “never again” to communism, and they will say “no more” to every form of totalitarianism and authoritarianism that tries, even in the slightest, to trample the beautiful dream of a free life.
That is why February 20 is a monument, a living monument and not a relic placed in a museum.
