The right-wingers and their old whims
After rejecting the PD’s invitation to form a pre-election alliance, Albania’s right-wingers gathered yesterday around a consultation table.
This is the first step after a long time in which the right-wingers have made an attempt, however minimal, to discuss the path toward a right-wing alliance.
This kind of issue is no longer merely a debate among politicians trying to find the right arrangements. Many of the country’s former voters, seeing the PD’s total crisis, are looking for a political grouping to which they can entrust their vote. The void left behind by the PD has once again compelled the capricious leaders of the right to gather, leaders who find it difficult to forget old stories. Nevertheless, what they have in common is that they have begun to consider a new alliance. This is a need of a broad electorate and of Albania’s future. If these leaders continue to remain apart, like ravens’ chicks, it would be no surprise if the post-June Parliament looked exactly like that of 26 May, with only one difference: the protagonists would be the leftists, the former communists. This would be the second national failure, and the crisis would once again require time to resolve.
The reshaping of the right must come about in the most natural way and not be forced at all. The mistakes made in previous alliances led to failure. The right-wingers seem to have learned something from the old days, when they practised platform politics. Election periods stirred feelings of egoism in them, which then dictated their not very optimistic results. In any case, the politics of that time unfolded in a different atmosphere. Today, however, they are obliged to calm their minds in response to the needs of ordinary people, who in electoral parlance are called voters.
Yesterday the right-wingers showed that they are not suffering from being kept on this course. Although they finalized nothing and had fundamental disagreements over their positions, they still have a little time to sit down at the table. Later, such an opportunity would be considered a luxury.
