Leka no longer spares either Berisha or Durollari

The election campaign has reached its end. King Leka I has also understood this recently; yesterday, at a national gathering at the Palace of Congresses, for the first time he launched a direct attack on Albanian politics of this century. “After King Zog, all Albanian leaders [?] are anti-national.” This was the sensational declaration made by the claimant to the throne before 2,000 of his monarchist supporters. After the fall of the Albanian Kingdom, Albania was led by the Communists, with Enver Hoxha and Ramiz Alia, and later by the Democrats in the 1990s, with Sali Berisha. Although the King did not choose to dwell in his analysis on the anti-nationalism of Albanian leaders, he made it quite clear that he has no intention of making any distinction between historical and contemporary Albanian leaders. The King was content to lump all the leaders of this century together. This has further weakened Leka’s position in the campaign. The party that strongly supports him has formed an alliance with Mr. Berisha’s party, whom the King himself has called anti-national. To save himself, Leka I declared yesterday that he continues to stand above the parties. Indeed, he openly stated that he has not made any kind of alliance with Sali Berisha’s PD. Leka has never been so categorical since his arrival in Albania. Judging by the campaign tours around Albania, it seems they have convinced Leka that relying on Berisha and his party will cause him more problems than it will solve. It seems he is not forgiving this alliance between the Legalists and the PD, although it is hard to imagine that their chairman, Durollari, made this decision on his own, his own man. For this reason, he is trying, by every means that politics can leave open to a king, to do the impossible and correct something. Yesterday’s meeting of the Legalists suggested that the latter’s alliance with the PD will be very short-lived. But, for the sake of the referendum and preserving the political balance, this alliance is difficult to break for now, despite its being paid for at an extremely high price: the royal throne. For this reason, Leka I prepared his supporters yesterday for the possibility that one day they might see him simply as an ordinary person in this country. Perhaps that will be the day when Leka enters politics in the original Albanian style.
