After Tritan, it is Berisha’s turn
Berisha’s presence at the helm increases the chances of the DP’s isolation
Tritan resigned; now it is Berisha’s turn to keep his word. He, too, will resign, but he will not be left without a post; Tritan’s position is vacant. In fact, Tritan had only straw keys in the DP; Berisha was the one pulling his strings, since he did not trust anyone else with the Party, which he had struggled so hard to get his hands on.
Berisha steps down from the presidential throne and takes his seat on the Party’s throne, with the solemn pledge that he will fight at the head of the opposition to lead the DP to a triumphant victory in Parliament. And Berisha keeps his word. He is energetic, listens only to himself and believes only in himself. He has no qualms about forgetting promises and pledges, the Visions 2000, and even “the deepest victory on 29 June.”
The former president said yesterday to AFP that he would lead the opposition, take the DP to victory and direct the opposition. Berisha’s statement does not conceal the careerist ambition to take the helm of the DP at any cost. Apparently, he has no doubt that winning the post is a foregone conclusion. Only the second claim remains troubling: that he will lead the opposition. It is not entirely clear whether Berisha considers only the DP to be the opposition, or also the small parties he used as extras on the campaign platforms, or whether [orebsi?] goes to the right? If his gaze turns to the right, it will be difficult to unite the parties that were [ibluaduara?] in this campaign in the DBSH, with Berisha as a partner. If the left won by a landslide, it is not to its credit, but to Berisha’s: he handed it power through his Don Quixote-like struggle, lacking any force of argument, as he tried to resist the communist onslaught.
A DP headed by Berisha will be a black cat for the Albanian electorate. Regardless of his being described yesterday by Lalymjer as “the man of the new Albania,” for Albanians he is the man who should have resigned and returned to the hospital among his fellow professors. His mission, like Tritan’s, is over. Berisha’s presence as DP chairman isolates the leading opposition party from the true Albanian right.
Yesterday, Tritan Shehu dissolved the [truporjen?] and spread word that he would head back to the hospital, among his colleagues, who had respected him more as a doctor than as party chairman. Perhaps Berisha himself should take this step as well. The sweeping defeat of the Democratic Party and the right-wing forces lays the weight of the mistakes Berisha made as party president squarely on his shoulders.
