DP to Berisha: Stay President, we don’t want you as chairman!

Berisha will leave the DP, but not the Presidency

The latest moves at the blue headquarters, the reports and complaints from DP branches at the grassroots, and a top-secret meeting of Democrats at the Presidency have confirmed the bad news: Berisha will not resign, but will leave the leadership and the list of DP members. The President, blamed by the authors of Memorandum No. 2, has been asked to give up his desire to be DP chairman, since he has brought it nothing but defeats. They deride Berisha as the loser of 29 June, the loser of the Constitution and the gravedigger of what went down in history as the first opposition party. It is understood that Berisha listened and took notes, but did not speak. Albanians will learn today what will actually happen with Berisha, after the secret midday meeting, scheduled the previous evening at the blue headquarters of the Democratic Party’s pyramid. Although the President of the Republic had declared that he would not coexist with the Socialists in this post, it is likely that he will abandon the resolve to resign. Those around the President have insisted that he not give the Socialists the satisfaction of his resignation, thereby handing them such a position on a platter to the former Communists. In fact, under Albanian law, a President is removed from office after taking up the mandate only if he commits treason against the Homeland, is mentally ill, dies, or violates the Constitution. In the first three cases, Berisha cannot be got rid of. He has not betrayed the Homeland, at least not publicly, he is not insane, and he is alive. So the only way is constitutional violations. If the Socialists use such a route, they should choose prison if they are right. Nano has declared that Berisha will not have the same fate as he did as an opposition leader, but given the inconsistent experiences of Albanian politics, anything may have been planned for Berisha. The latter does not seem inclined to give up the DP, when the Socialists have won two-thirds of Parliament, while the DP no longer offers such a comfortable bed. The latest memorandum-writers are making this happen directly by demanding the DP chairmanship for themselves. As a President who does not belong to the DP, outside the party he could control the DP in time and possibly isolate the memorandum-writers, who appear to be the majority in the DP.

Berisha told Fino last night: I won’t leave without you

For the Flag, against violence

By telephone from Struga, our correspondent Nazim Rashidi: A rally under the motto “For the national flag, against violence,” organized in Struga under the leadership of the branch of the Albanian Democratic Party. At the very beginning of the rally, those present enthusiastically chanted in support of the national flag, against police violence and for their rights, which they deserve. The first to speak at the protest rally was the chairman of the ADP branch, Mr. Doko, who said, “This state cannot break away from the methods of the former Yugoslav state, or from all its leaders, whose surnames end in ‘vic’.” How can we not express our outrage, he said, when our Albanian brothers… Ms. Muca also spoke at the rally, emphasizing that “the brutal conduct of the Macedonian police has nothing to do with democracy.” Another speaker, a representative of the youth, said, “This rally, like many others, has been forced upon us not to celebrate but to protest against violence, against the practice of abusing Albanians, who have historically been discriminated against and killed solely for ethnic, cultural and linguistic interests. Albanians are indigenous to these lands and are not a destabilizing factor, as the current government’s propaganda claims; Albanians are only defending themselves and their rights, established over centuries.” At the end of the rally, the brutal police violence was condemned once again, and the demands addressed to international public opinion and the Macedonian government were announced. The government was asked: - To release unconditionally everyone arrested by the Macedonian police. - To bring those responsible for demolishing local institutions to justice. The rally called on all international organizations to make every possible effort to stop the violence against Albanians in Macedonia, and to lift the undeclared state of emergency in Gostivar and Tetovo.
