The opposition signs its defeat, the authorities march on arrogantly

Pjetr is handed over to the doctors, Berisha asks for prayers, Pollo lights candles for the martyr’s soul Berisha, overwhelmed by the desire to be the first in the assembly, had declared that he would lead the opposition toward paths of success, and after proclaiming himself leader, he laid out the strategy for victory. One after another, the victories went downhill. At first, the boycott tactic failed as soon as it began, and it could not have been otherwise, because the poor imitation of the Socialists’ boycott, when Berisha was in power, had been condemned by international bodies. The tactic of fistfights in parliament, carried out through Azem Hajdari, also did not bring any great victory; both times Hajdari was declared champion of his own weight, but the PD in opposition did not win anything significant. Pjetr’s martyrdom also did not produce what was expected. Yesterday, the man described as the Mandela of Albania was handed over to the doctors, perhaps against his will. In a way, apart from the human regret, the two-week resistance of the former speaker of parliament had no other pinnacle. Noli is said to be speaking of political success; the left in power did not give way, it remained strong in the stronghold. With its own cynicism, the left has declared with euphoria: as long as Berisha is in opposition, we will always be on the tops of the armchairs... The comment is superfluous. Berisha is not credible at the head of the opposition. Perhaps with the “Arbnori” phenomenon he wanted to kill two birds with one stone: to subdue the authorities and to divert attention from the internal quarrels in PD, in other words to silence the voices of the reformers who are demanding changes within Berisha’s Party. In fact, he achieved neither one nor the other. He failed at both. Yesterday too, Berisha declared that he had decided to boycott Parliament again. At the press conference he asked for prayers, pious remembrances for Arbnori, the lighting of candles, and invited support for the rally in front of the PD headquarters. But the silent rally was another failure for the opposition leader Berisha, who, it must be said, did not go to the square himself, perhaps sensing people’s coolness. The crowd of 300-400 people was watched with indifference by passersby. The PD’s number 2, the charismatic Pollo, did not mention slogans from the previous night: “Today poison one square, tomorrow a street, the day after a city...” In fact, even last night, not even one courtyard could be filled, not even that of the PD. The facts speak of Berisha’s lack of credibility in opposition, and if things continue like this, Albanians must prepare to remain for a long time under the domination of the left. PD reformers should not concern themselves only with newspaper articles; they must fight more to free their base from tutela. As for the United Albanian Right, which yesterday woke from its post-election lethargy with the meeting it organized, it must lend more energy to the opposition struggle. It does not need anyone’s orders to organize itself in the frontal struggle against the left; nor does it need to curry favor with Berisha in order to be under his command and be placed in the opposition. Albanians are becoming aware of the role of the right in the country’s political life. Enough of the indifferent intellectuals waiting under the covers. Albania cannot be built without everyone’s contribution.
