After press freedom, Albanians wait for other freedoms
Will we continue to call property freedom a sacrilege, socialists and democrats?
Albanians in general, and journalists in particular, are almost shocked by the surprise approval of the law that removes the shackles from the free press.
With astonishing determination, the socialist majority suspended the sanctions on press freedom and freedom of expression by repealing the old law on the press. During the five years of PD rule, the press was the bastion most threatened by official censorship, because state structures had narrowed the space for information. The doors of the highest state departments were frequented only by journalists close to the authorities or by their trusted neighbors. This is so true that certain newspapers were exclusive outlets for crime reporting or enjoyed the privilege of publishing SHIK news.
As a result of the ruling power’s license over its fragmented domain and the bombast of its ideas of freedom, many journalists from the opposition press, in conflict with the Government, experienced deprivations and were hindered in carrying out their mission of informing. Journalists who dared to touch the top of the pyramid were brought down and mercilessly mistreated.
Even just to demonstrate a formal opposition to outdated legislation, the socialist parliamentary group unanimously supported the idea of repealing the previous law. No one loses from the absolute licensing of free speech. The socialist leadership follows formulas of compromise. By expanding the space for free speech, it fulfills an important human, civic, and political dimension, thus approaching in practice the Universal Charter of Human Rights. In this way the ruling side positions its arguments and retouches its old image. This is a political and diplomatic advantage.
In a line of compensation, the new government, through the act of ratifying absolute freedom of expression, risks pushing the whole package of other laws that complete Human Rights and freedoms into the Greek calends. Also, just as PD will continue to consider the right to lawful property, the right of citizens to move freely, the right to public assemblies and protests, and the right of Albanians to affirm the fragmented entity as sacrilege,
The repeal of the press law should in any case be welcomed, but this act is only the alpha for fulfilling the true democratic mission. If the “republican customs duty” were not practiced, as long as lawful property does not take root, the “Albanian” state does not take root. Albanians will suffer under the weight of communist mentalities, obstacles will be placed in the way of private enterprise, and foreign investors will stay away.
