Nano should release the original. The political compromise with the fourth estate is in the Government's best interest But the Government, it seems, is not in the mood. Its current indifference shows that Nano has taken the war with the press lightly. Formally, Berisha did not act this way. Outwardly, he had declared friendship with the parliamentarians of free speech. Publishers are being cautious and have stepped up their efforts. Yesterday, after Nano's removal, another move was taken. The publishers met with the chairman of the parliamentary economic committee, Anastas Angjeli, who showed himself willing to help establish bridges between the Government and the fourth estate. A political compromise was discussed. The compromise is vital for both powers. What are the publishers of the daily newspapers asking for? Nothing more and nothing less than exemption from fiscal obligations, exemption from VAT. It would not cost the state much, while for the newspapers this relief would guarantee survival. Someone has said, "just one truckload of undeclared smuggled goods, perhaps half a truckload." The comparison is figurative, because the newspapers would be the first to denounce the failure to clear customs. If Nano intends to impose 22 percent VAT on the press, that presupposes the death of the newspapers. If he wants to get rid of the opposition with a drastic measure, he would do well to find more honest ways. The state has a duty to ensure the survival of newspapers. There are states that create budget subsidies to help newspapers, but Albanian publishers are being cautious. The demand is within economic logic. No subsidy is being requested, only the removal of fiscal obligations. Journalists know that the Government does not have it easy. It is facing major tasks, major pressures, but what can be done is what is being demanded. The Government must reach consensus with the press; otherwise its difficulties will increase. A political compromise is required; otherwise the consequences will fall on the Government. The newspapers have thought about escalating their struggle for survival. The press is lost, lost indeed. It cannot live long with the taxes the government has placed on its back. It is said that even yesterday Nano did not enthusiastically receive the publishers' proposals-demands. All the worse for him. The publishers will wait until 15 September, when Angjeli gives his reply. Then there are many forms of protest. We believe Nano will not be interested in a boomerang of such press-like proportions.
