Debt scams - The government between two fires
The debt riots resume.
In addition to Vlorë and several peripheral cities, where the slogans "we want our money" have been heard, it is Tirana that in recent days has been experiencing the distress of hundreds of citizens gathering in front of the offices of the lending firms in search of the deposited money. Yesterday, for nearly 2 hours, it was blocked by a crowd demonstration waiting to meet the owner of the VEFA company.
The wave of protests is growing more and more. In the city of Vlorë, slogans have been thrown against the Government and the Prime Minister. The order from the Minister of Finance to block bank transfers has angered the crowd of creditors. The creditors’ association is reported to be preparing a memorandum addressed to the Nano Government, requesting the cancellation of the Minister’s order and permission for the lending companies to continue their production activity, which would make repayment of the debt easier. The announced hunger strike does not seem to have disturbed the government cabinet.
The Prime Minister’s advisers received the creditors’ representatives with indifference, without offering any possible solution.
The Prime Minister returned from Brussels, exhilarated by promises of financial aid. But this EU aid is the fund allocated for reimbursing public-sector wages and not for compensating lost money. The government still has no project to reimburse the debt scams. Nano’s election promise was only a show. The danger that the hidden money posed yesterday is not present in the psychology of the new rulers. They hope to atrophy this issue by postponing it according to the principle of "pull it, but don’t break it." But the IMF conditions are extremely strict and final. In these circumstances the Government is caught between two fires. If you also add the diplomatic pressure of the neighbors through the refugees, there comes a moment when the Government is in a very difficult dilemma. The Nano cabinet should not choose the formula followed by Berisha. At present, both sides, the government and the majority of citizens, are lost. The only solution is to help companies with productive activities by creating fiscal and customs facilities. The country has great resources that require only the most efficient administration, in line with modern standards. The Government must face the risk head-on. The situation is not as calm as it hopes. Yesterday’s revolts are a serious warning that could mine the government. For its part, the VEFA company seems to come out clean. It has left the ball outside Nano’s door. Yesterday’s petition calls for an answer.
