Two percent social policy
VAT, the shark of small and medium-sized business. Small capitalists on the verge of bankruptcy
The reduction of the new VAT, from 22 percent as decided by the Government meeting to 20 percent by the Socialist parliamentary group, was commented on by the Parliamentary Committee of the PS and by segments of the independent press as the closest expression of the Government’s social policy. In fact, Angjeli suggested to the Government that the saved 2 percent should be used to protect the unemployed, or citizens who receive social assistance. After fulfilling their social duty to that extent, as socialists they are, the PS deputies turned to the problem of mineral water, asking for it to be favored, since it is imported from Greece and served for "kiosks and roses." The people were waiting for poverty to be eased and for greater guarantees for overcoming the crisis, but the socialists are serving them new, uncontrolled taxes, conditioned by the questionable policy of the IMF mission.
The newly approved fiscal package directly attacks the interests of Albanian citizens, since the rise in prices will be felt very quickly. Moreover, the astronomical VAT will ruin small and medium-sized businesses in record time, further narrowing the space for the new Albanian capitalism. The experiment that the PS is trying to carry out at the expense of Albanians requires a heavy tribute. This experiment threatens the capitalist future of the country, because very soon the state will aim to buy the assets of bankrupt firms, thus restructuring the image of state enterprises. The signal for this was already given by the pressure exerted on borrowing companies to submit to nationalization. Transparency, so much discussed, is no longer understood in its proper sense. It has been politicized by socialist officials, who have appointed a party man as head of the "administration."
The new VAT, which will start operating on 1 October of this year, also destroys the few illusions that Albanians had begun to nourish about the free-market economy system.
Now we must all prepare to face the ration-coupon system and the spirit of socialist collectivism.
- Today,
we’ve got quite a lot
