A spontaneous meeting of the PD leadership late yesterday set out the general guidelines of the new political strategy. Non-recognition of Parliament, describing the majority as criminalized and the MPs’ mandates as unlawful, continuing and further intensifying the protests depending on the situations that arise, further reorganizing the party and atrophying the “reformist” structures will constitute the basic points around which the new political course will be positioned. The boycott of Parliament will not be withdrawn as an act of coercion, but will remain conditional on the current demand by the Democratic leadership for Nano and less senior public officials to resign. The new political strategy will not publicly promote the idea of new parliamentary elections, calculating that this process will come very soon because of the deepening crisis. The demand for early elections, following the US State Department’s response urging against speculation over the criminal incident in Parliament, would bring the PD into conflict with the formula that international diplomacy has sought to apply to ease the political crisis in Albania. As has also been noted in the pro-PD press, the Democratic leadership has recently taken care to avoid the tendency to attack international democratic institutions and to uphold, in particular, US policy in support of the development of democracy, including in countries such as Albania. Just a few days ago, at the PD leadership’s direction, the press enthusiastically celebrated the US national holiday, showing a questionable willingness to repair relations that had been misunderstood and, in some cases, unfairly prejudged. The PD must put into practice the noble idea of early elections, taking the Albanian context into account as well. The devastating and extremely grim image that haunted the PD at the time of the state’s spectacular collapse, after it had been abandoned by the party, is still present in the minds of the vast majority of Albanians. Berisha’s propaganda counteroffensive has not been able to retouch the face of the crime and tragedy that a family has paid for with its own suffering. Under these circumstances, as the source of the PD–PS conflict accepts no formula for compromise, even a temporary one, political life will spin toward the limits of absurdity, unable to give concrete form to real democratic values. The blockage of the political process makes the role of the Right imperative: it must reorganize in order to put an end to the agony and depression of neocommunist politics.
