The Right faces neo-communist agony
A spontaneous meeting of the PD Presidency in the late hours of yesterday set out, in broad terms, the new political strategy. Non-recognition of Parliament, by deeming the majority incriminated and the MPs’ mandates illegal, the continuation and further escalation of protests depending on the situations that arise, the further reorganization of the party and the rapprochement with the so-called “reformers” will be the basic points around which the new political course will be positioned. The boycott of Parliament will not be presented as an imposed act, but will be a continuation conditioned by the democratic leadership’s current demand for the resignation of Nano and of less important official figures.
The new political strategy will not publicly promote the idea of new parliamentary elections, calculating that this process will come very soon because of the deepening crisis. The call for early elections, following the reaction of the American State Department not to speculate on the criminal incident in Parliament, would confront the PD with the formula that international diplomacy has tried to apply in order to ease the political crisis in Albania.
As has also been noted in the pro-PD press, the democratic leadership has recently taken care to avoid the tendency to attack international democratic institutions and to support especially U.S. policy in order to promote democracy also in the country of Albania. The press, influenced by the PD leadership only a few days earlier, enthusiastically welcomed the United States’ cool national stance, showing a clear predisposition toward restoring misunderstood and in some cases prejudiced relations.
The PD must put into action the firm idea of early elections, also taking Albanian integrity into account. The bleak and deeply gloomy image that dominated the PD at the moment of the spectacular collapse of the state still remains present before the vast majority of Albanians. Berisha’s propaganda counteroffensive has not been able to retouch the face of crime and tragedy, for which hundreds of families pay the price.
In these circumstances, when the PD-PS tension accepts no formula of compromise, even a temporary one, political life will spin to the limits of absurdity, without being able to bring about real democratic values. The blocking of the political process makes the role of the Right imperative; it must reorganize itself in order to put an end to the agony and depression of neo-communist politics.
