Majko liberated Albania
Politics mocks history
Albanians are undoubtedly the strangest species on the globe. Especially those involved in politics. History in this country, split in two, is suffering at the hands of these rare species. For six years, politics has been mocking history. As soon as a decision is made, the order is given, loud and clear: About-face! Pity this country and pity this people, because, as things seem to be turning out, they will be left without a history. For some time now, politics has done nothing but squeeze an eraser in one hand and a pencil in the other, writing and erasing dates from history. Our politicians are so irresponsible that they forget what they said just three years ago. In short, they erase what they themselves wrote. While, on the other hand, they discuss the wounds of the partisans with such pathos that you would think the people who liberated Albania were not the partisans, but Majko and the socialists. So, when was Albania liberated: when the socialists won, or when the democrats won? According to yesterday’s decision, liberation would have taken place on 29 November 1997, but in 1993 it was different. The democrats liberated it on 28 November. What did the former partisans think? It doesn’t matter; Majko with Hasani, or Berisha with the democrats, will decide for them. Yesterday, in a bizarre session, the Assembly of political men decided, on its own authority, to change the date of Albania’s liberation to spite the democrats, who had erased the previous date of the servants. Albanians will have a new liberation date every time the majority in Parliament changes. The signs of history will be erased and rubbed out of the Albanian calendar whenever the factions change, and whenever Majko, Berisha, Hasani, Laço—or any of those who have politics stuck in their craw—feel like it. It is said that the country is supposed to get a Constitution this year, but the democrats agree that it should be adopted by the Parliament we have now. Their threat has been made public: when we become the majority, we will make a new Constitution, a new peace, a new fiscal system, a new liberation date, and... the history of Albania will take one step forward and two steps back. This country will be at the mercy of being tossed about like a ship on the open sea in a storm, because that is what our wretched politicians want. Will the referendum be held on 28 or 29 November? Yesterday shows that politics will mock history, while politicians will continue banging their heads against the wall.
