Godo gives politics a lesson
. Yesterday, at the epilogue of the Third Congress of the PRSH, something happened that perhaps was not expected. After an extremely successful report, applauded almost paragraph by paragraph, and greetings full of superlatives from both the government and the opposition, he suddenly resigned. This was the Congress’s most heated moment. Godo’s veto of his irrevocable resignation led his supporters and followers to apply pressure too, but he did not waver from the decision he had made. Godo’s resignation caused surprise, not because the new candidate Fatmir Mediu did not have the reputation of a politician suited to the high post, but because Albanian politics, during these seven years of pluralism, has become accustomed to re-electing its leaders. Indeed, some of them even use bodyguards to secure votes. Thus, the heavyweights of politics, who are unfortunately playing with the fate of Albania, along with the lesser players, or political fireworks, have been reluctant to demonstrate the institution of resignation. Mr. Godo thus became a lesson-giver in politics worthy of respect. The reasons for his resignation are now public. They were not discussed behind closed doors, but openly. The heavy workload of his roles as co-chair of the Constitution Commission and Chairman of Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as his health problems, were not enough to persuade the delegates to accept the resignation Godo had insistently tendered. In any case, the resignation is a fait accompli. Republicans are convinced that, at this difficult time of political crisis, when the game is being played like a game of chess, Godo’s mind is indispensable. Republicans cannot play without him. He has been the most successful politician, especially since the start of the crisis, the overthrow of the system, the politicians’ tempers flaring, and so on. He managed several times to bring political opponents to the table. The PR Congress itself was a civic manifestation and an expression of political maturity. The participation of the entire Albanian political spectrum, and greetings from the Left and the Right, confirmed the truth that Godo is a distinctive name in politics. Republicans are convinced that Godo’s involvement will remain constant in PR politics; his experience and the acuity with which he has resolved complicated situations will be needed by PR for a long time to come. Yesterday, after Mediu was elected Chairman, he not only embraced him and shook his hand, but also promised to always stand by him and help him.
