Meidani: Milošević, the lesser evil... Following the American initiative, the Franco-German initiative for solving the Kosovo issue emerges. The letter from the two Foreign Ministers of Germany and France has surprised Kosovo's political supporters, and even those of the LDK. More and no less, the letter sent to Belgrade calls for a special status for what was once called an autonomous province. The comments so far from Kosovo are evasive. At the press conference, the deputy chairman of the LDK, Mr. Hyseni, used diplomatic language. He recalled that the people of Kosovo voted for independence in the referendum, but will not reject interim solutions until the final goal, Kosovo's independence, is achieved. On the other hand, it is striking that the letter from the Foreign Ministers was sent to Belgrade only moments before the meeting of the Albanian leader of the LDK, Ibrahim Rugova, who is said to have met last night late with the French foreign minister in Paris. Coincidence?! However true the Franco-German diplomatic letter may be, Albanian public opinion sees in this initiative a tightening that could lead the country toward Belgrade. If the European initiative is added to the American one, there is a chance that the Kosovo issue will be internationalized beyond the way the supporters of a solution imagine. Europe knows well the sick nationalist Serbia on the other side, and it is hoped that it will not yield as long as Serbia refuses to renounce the genocide it is carrying out against Albanians. And what is the Albanian position? It seems that the thesis of the president regarding a third party is becoming crystallized (an early thesis) and that of the Republican Party.
