The flag unites, politics divide Albanians

85 years ago, at a time when the Balkan invasion was more ferocious than ever, Albania proclaimed its Independence, setting a new path for fulfilling the national aspirations. 28 November 1912 was undoubtedly the most undisputed politico-diplomatic act in Albanian history. Independence for Albanians was a specific necessity that defined national existence. The significance of Independence was experienced by Albanians as a need for development, stability, and well-being for future generations. All human resources, values, and inherited cultural-patriotic customs were put at the service of Independence. The process that followed the act of Independence responded to national priorities, influencing Albanian consciousness from one generation to the next. Although some social, economic, and political structures were brought down, the spirit of Independence remained an inseparable part of Albanian being. The 85 years of Independence showed that Albania exists as a nation not only with tradition, but also with clear European predispositions, with contemporary dress and aims. But it is deeply tragic for a nation like ours that it celebrates its National Holiday divided into five states, under the harsh pressure of neighboring chauvinisms. In these critical moments, despite the spiritual communication among Albanians, there is no nationwide platform to realize the dream of Unification and to institutionalize survival. The fault is not with the Albanians, but with the politicians. Under their influence, the spirit of unity is avoided and the spirit of division is encouraged. Even on National Day, which is a sacred day, division among Albanians takes on ominous forms. The parties, after arguing at length about the dates across the entire Albanian space, seek to impose by decree and rhetoric the heroes of love for the nation, wanting to wrest political monopolies. Thirsty only for power, the politicians have been blinded by cosmopolitanism to such an extent that, even on National Holiday, Skanderbeg Square is filled with foreign flags, as if to deny Albanians their greatest wealth—the feeling of Independence.
