Crises and conflicts can be avoided only through the consolidation of the values of democracy and the market. But Prime Minister Fatos Nano, at the head of his political clan, does not think so. The concept of politics defended today by the Socialist majority is integration toward Western standards, under the protectorate of a neighboring country. This is not a matter of coexistence among nations and states, but of a hypothetical one-sidedness, which appears to stem not only from the unstable situation and the transition, but also from an old mentality. Yet this Socialist concept of “integration” is not in line with the basic principles and commitments undertaken through international documents that define relations of partnership and inclusion. A condition for moving toward Western integration is considered to be regional stability and close cooperation among the Balkan states. The necessary basis for development is provided by the OSCE’s fundamental documents and other international bodies, jointly approved, which include major agreements on economic cooperation and integration. Albania may seek to increase regional cooperation, but not under brutal protectorate from Italy. The factor of cut [?[ ]?] and instability in the region would be precisely the abstract cosmopolitanism of Albanian officials.
