Presidential revanche
More than once, President Meidani has drawn Parliament’s attention to its failure to respect the Constitutional Provisions governing the functioning of official institutions in Albania. But yesterday the presidential response seemed more severe in nature. The statement accompanying the resubmission to Parliament of Law No. 1831, dated 6.8.1998, “On the National Intelligence Service”, denounced a tendency toward “speculative references to the past”. The monopoly of power, rendered powerless in the hands of Fatos Nano, opens a new series of political debates within the left. It cannot be denied that the gesture by which Meidani’s people call for respect for democracy and the constitutional provisions contains many existential elements. Do they know that they are not simply resolving a way of organizing politics and institutions, but are seeking a way to choose their own freedom, so as no longer to be what they are? In this examination, they draw strength from the little tradition of democracy that has accumulated, but also from the brilliant ideas of several figures.
