By Ekrem Bardha, USA Kosovo is indeed in flames, but there we are dealing with a chauvinist and criminal like Millosheviçi, whom only the International Community can stop. The situation in Albania is different. We Albanians ourselves are responsible for the situation in Albania, and we must also be at the forefront of healing it, before seeking help from abroad. Let us analyze it briefly. In the early years of democracy, one day I went to Krujë at the invitation of the then chairman of the DP, Sali Berisha, and Eduard Selami. All along the road from Tirana and on the way back, in every populated area there were crowds of people cheering “Democracy-Sali” and holding two fingers up as a sign of victory. When I returned to Tirana, Mr. Berisha asked me about my impressions. I told him that hopes were high and that he had an extraordinary opportunity in his hands. But, I pointed out, it was especially important that he keep the promises he was making to the people. Otherwise, I told him, those two fingers raised in the air would turn around and poke your eyes out. The figures by which Albania’s economic progress was being assessed as much faster than that of all the former communist countries seemed to be a false indicator. As a result, the economy was not developing. Jobs were not being created, and 90% of the money in circulation was in the trade sector.
