Five anarchies plus
By Dalip GRECA I Tzot Noli, a people’s deputy in Zog’s Parliament, in one of the speeches most applauded by the opposition, on 2 September 1923, before the National Council, defined the confusion of his time as five anar... the fruit of five anarchies, which remain relevant even after 75 years. The first anarchy, religious anarchy. The second, social anarchy: here the peasant is a bey and the bey a peasant (don’t haunt us with the bogeyman, my lord, because our politics is afraid of the beys, so we divided the land per capita and turned them all into peasants. We didn’t upset comrade Ramiz, as he had envisioned it: he said per capita, we divided it per capita; the government and the great opposition agreed on this beautifully. Some grandsons and daughters of kulaks who tried to seize their lands found out what democracy means. The Democratic Party’s policemen made their backs softer than their bellies and drove them out in rags from that notorious strike.) The third, moral anarchy: here the gene recognizes no master. (Today, in the name of morality, politics swears as if by its own mother. Dare to do otherwise and you’ll see.) The fourth, patriotic anarchy; here, within a single day, as if by magic, the traitor becomes a patriot and the patriot becomes a traitor. (On this point, even today there is no great difference; the same coin is used. Out of their great love for the homeland, the fathers of politics have set Albania ablaze whenever their armchairs have been in danger. As in the time of my lord, when those who had fought for the “letters” and their father’s flag, those who had burned central Albania or kissed up to the andartes, were paraded as great patriots. What has happened in our time? Worse than in my lord’s time. Those who laid waste to the Fatherland weep bitterly in the speeches they give before the people over Mother Albania’s tragic fate, but they also boast that they will take care of her
