Ideologies feed crime

The time has come for the ecstasy of crime, with the atrocities of its actions, to be removed from the economic and political life of Albanians. The absurdity of this phenomenon, which is preventing government officials from freeing themselves from their alliance with the Mafia, provokes the restoration of a society of rulers, closed off in an environment of fear and misery. The demand to put people at the center of development is the fundamental step toward abandoning criminal psychologies and carrying out the process of change in Albania. The government of the Socialist majority does not devote its main attention to people and does not invest in them. By abusing their offices, government officials seek to concentrate income and national wealth in their own hands. Nothing is being done to eradicate poverty and create jobs. The model of the development process necessarily requires different units of measurement. Ideologies cannot nourish the hopes of ordinary people. There is no room now for rhetoric and propaganda. Concrete action is needed to improve the situation, which means eliminating crime and achieving development according to normal standards. The preliminary agreement to employ around 20,000 Albanian workers seasonally in Italy during the spring of this year was the most widely publicized news for Albanians, who are realizing that the macroeconomic policy being pursued cannot guarantee sustainable investment in employment. Although it is said that a sound monetary policy has been pursued, the harvest has not been good. The country's economy is under the pressure of political shocks. Almost all public institutions operate as political structures. These circumstances must inevitably be changed. The 1998 economic year looks set to bring dramatic developments for Albanians.
