Encouraging aspirations toward the collapse of pro-Western moral and democratic values is leading Albania toward self-isolation and the complete paralysis of the country’s economic life, German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel urgently warned. In the densely interconnected world of the late twentieth century, accepting Albanian complexity is a source of uncertainty for Europe. Germany’s chief diplomat stressed the urgent need for moral consensus among our political forces, in the spirit of national reconciliation. This warning, which may be accompanied by the cessation of EU aid, is, as it should be, Europe’s final gesture in its endless diplomatic efforts toward Albania. Europe has put the advantage of security first, disregarding subjectivity. Albanian politics is so distorted as to be almost absurd in the face of this way of thinking politically and diplomatically. Totalitarian powers have prompted threats from the other side, with the pendulum of modern European thought. The general Albanian crisis can be overcome if political forces assert their command over their own destiny. This is the source of the message Mr. Kinkel conveys to Albania’s political community. Albania’s fate is regarded as part of Europe’s political fate. It is this dimension that should give shape to decisive ideas. Continued/page 3
