The West’s message falls on deaf ears

Albanian politics suffers from complexity The importance of the West’s political message can be gauged from the growing tendency to fill the inner substance of Albanian democracy with a state of fear and psychological terror. This state is most pronounced in the governing political spectrum, where tendencies prevail that have prompted the re-emergence of demagoguery. Prime Minister Nano is attributing to himself and his cabinet a subjective existence in the face of objective socioeconomic and political conditions. And the prime minister’s right-hand man, K. Islami, issued ominous warnings about certain ministers, chiefly the ministers of transport and the economy. These structures can now be considered eliminated. Islami implied that the offensive against the ministers would be modest, but its effects would be institutionalized. It is striking that the cabinet chief’s intentions and warnings are systematic and coordinated with the state commission for vetting the records of senior officials. Indeed, this public commission issued a statement concerning the removal of a senior official because of his criminal past. Everything is kept secret, to such an extent that many senior officials have begun to fear one another. In the governance of Continued on page 3
