Clinton did not forget to mention Serbian culture and history, as well as their contribution to the war against Nazism. On this occasion, the American president announced the Alliance’s main objective in the attacks: damaging Milošević’s military capability so that he would no longer engage in war against the Albanians of Kosovo. Thus, for the world’s greatest power, Milošević is solely responsible for the Kosovo crisis and international concern. It is no coincidence that Clinton reminds the Serbian people of the war against Nazism, led by Hitler. American diplomacy is drawing a parallel between Hitler and Milošević, reminding the citizens of Serbia that the history of National Socialist dictators must come to an end—and that, for this purpose, the people of Serbia too are being bombed. Like Hitler, Milošević pursued a monstrous, delusional and brutal policy. Mass murder was institutionalized on an unprecedented scale; death was organized on the basis of the mass production of deaths. Only in Hitler’s time had the destruction of human life been carried out with such concentrated force as was inflicted in Bosnia and Kosovo, in the name of irrational and self-justifying aims.
