Civic solidarity

By Aleksandër GARULI No one could have imagined solidarity among Albanians on both sides of the border. It is a blood bond awakened in a tragic moment. It seems the political parties lowered their flags before the national flag. The current situation should remind politicians that before being party members, they are compatriots with those bearing the immense tragedy of being violently driven from their homes. Today, especially in the opposition—the opposition—we must remember that we are Albanians, whose survival is at risk. What does this mean? All the more so, every political party is now being asked to be part of the process and not merely an observer of it. In a tragic situation like the one we are experiencing, sticking to complaints and suggestions is not enough. Compared with party activity, civic action is a step ahead. Civic solidarity in Kurë and throughout Albania is astonishing foreign analysts, observers and journalists. Civic solidarity has been dubbed “the Albanian miracle,” “popolitics? Could there also be political solidarity in the face of the national tragedy, when the Serbian beast is trying to seize our identity and deny our blood brothers the right to live simply because they are Albanians? Albanian politics should not overlook examples such as Berlusconi, who supports his political opponent, Dalema, on the Albanian issue. Today, positive relations must be dictated by national interests. This must not be confused with conformism. There is time for political battles.

The Kosovo tragedy in the press

The Kosovo tragedy found the pages of Albanian newspapers open to it. The moment-by-moment reporting on Kosovo’s emptying was the mission the print media took on without anyone giving it an order. Albanian journalists proved that in this wartime situation they were just as capable as Western journalists. Through the pages of the daily press, accounts of Serbian massacres, burnings, inhuman torture... began to pour in. Everything was happening across the border. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why, within the state borders here, brothers of the same blood were ready to share their table, their home, everything. All the print media, as well as the electronic media, during these difficult and exhausting days has provided and continues to provide Page 19
