More than half a million residents have been forcibly displaced from Kosovo, while the number of arrivals in Albania alone is estimated at around 250,000. “A ridiculous effort,” said British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, describing the entire peace effort of the international community if Milošević does not allow the refugees to return. “There can be no peace without the people of Kosovo,” Cook stressed. Milošević has condemned the people of Kosovo to live in exile. This is the gravest crime of this century. Such a mass displacement was not seen even during the Second World War. When will the Serbian criminal adventure be brought to an end? President Clinton declared that the Alliance’s air strikes would continue for another two weeks, but US Secretary of Defense William Cohen stated that NATO had no plans to use ground troops. Despite the major international effort to break the last dictator in the East, the Western community must state its objectives more clearly. In this difficult situation, speculators are taking advantage, resembling leeches that seek to suck other people’s blood. And in Kukës it has been a real hell: only a few military vehicles and one or two buses have arrived. Private operators have made the rules, raising the fare to 50 marks from Kukës to Tirana. There were also cases in which they made people get off in the middle of the road after taking their money. The most painful fact came to light through some heartless people who, for the sake of money, did the Serbs’ work: they went to the Kosovars and told them: Give us this many marks so we won’t send your sons and husbands as soldiers to the KLA...
