Why aren’t Albanians celebrating?
By DALIP GRECA Albanians seem to have been gripped by paralysis and have no intention of celebrating Kosovo’s victory. The Serbs are acting differently: they rushed to appear in the squares as the triumphant victors of the war, tore up NATO and American flags, and poured champagne in squares and discos. The mentality of victory in defeat—the Serbian defeat—the courage and propaganda of Millosheviç make an impression on you. The challenge they are trying to present to the West is worth taking into consideration. Although the fascist army, the most barbaric of this century’s end, is withdrawing from Kosovo, the Serbian people are welcoming it with flowers. For his part, Slobodan Millosheviçi is leaving nothing out of the “victories,” from the parade to the speeches full of praise for the world’s most “invincible” army, which supposedly challenged NATO. Even the most short-sighted saw what a challenge the Serbian army posed to the West; the most significant fact is its current departure from Kosovo. Once, before the intervention of troops in Kosovo, the entire Albanian political class took to “Skënderbej” Square and, under the slogan “One nation, one position,” issued the call—NATO in Kosovo! But now that NATO has entered Kosovo, why is Albanian politics silent? It is astonishing that no grand rally has been organized for this historic moment for the Albanian nation. Some small rally has gone unnoticed and has attracted no attention from the public here or further afield. Politics aside, what about the state? It was the responsibility of the government of the mother country to bring together brothers of the same blood and declare victory. Perhaps the prime minister’s advisers or those of the president could at least suggest to the country’s leaders that a few words should have been said about the victory. Perhaps they could have made sure that one or two of the president’s countless decorations were also awarded to those NATO pilots who died here on our soil in the name of the fight for Kosovo. In any case, there is still time to celebrate victory. There is a saying in the treasury of the people’s wisdom: good things are worth waiting for! Perhaps the government will remember to hold a ceremony, even if only a symbolic one.
