The "citizenship" of the anti-vigil

Adriana Pasko Kësovari has gone out to the gate to meet a villager and to set the “Kosovars” of the capital into motion. So it is told until evening; she has appeared to him in the middle of the yard like a black Cassandra and says behind their backs: “the Kosovars are going to bring us ruin.” They are drowning us with water and electricity. They will make us sick with the flu. Now they have even gone beyond the fence and are making noise. They must have put on music for pleasure. But horror of horrors, some Kosovars have pitched tents right in the middle. Nubia among the boys was sitting there, all alone, and had seen it, without being disturbed, near a lady. As time goes by, they bring in after their mother from the road and from the fence many of the anti-vigil people gather behind. The bride also brings in others from the family. Not only with a tunnel and horror. But they have occupied our house up to the pavement! The people in the yard gather as if in a council. It was as if an appeal were coming. Meanwhile, the tale begins in the usual way after evening falls. Everyone rises in revolt. The villager Kësovar gets going to tell the others about the hidden predator that is entering their house. Then he goes out to the door with his hands raised, shouts, and disappears into the darkness. Many of the people remain astonished. Perhaps it is the first time they have seen such a trapped man, one who seeks with harsh language and with fear. On the other hand, everyone feels that a kind of tension has fallen over the yard. Because in the neighboring stable, too, the wind of opposition has entered. An old woman with a tied head and a sharp nose says that “these people are wicked.” A mustached man contradicts her. Another speaks of bread. Someone else of the children. The women speak of water. And the conversation degrades into the banal way of an irritated neighborhood. The house of the “vigil” has frightened everyone. It seems like enough cause for all the small grudges to burst out. In a moment, a young girl comes from the road and says that the police have arrived. Everyone falls silent. Some leave. Some go inside. The tent remains there, as a sign of a guilt that does not exist. p. 16
