By Ismail KADARE Having had excessive faith in the virtues and maturity of the Albanian people, I thought they would be capable of becoming democratic quickly. In this respect I was mistaken, in the name of building the future. As often happens with writers, it turned out I was wrong. Then I changed my mind and proposed several times that the files be opened fully—that is, the files on crimes and dossiers. Throughout the post-communist world, but especially in Albania, an ugly phenomenon occurred. A fog and chaos were created in which everyone became either guilty or innocent. This suited the criminals, those who had brought the Albanian people to their knees and tortured them for more than 40 years. And in a way, they succeeded. If Albanian life is examined carefully, it will be noticed that the people who settled into comfortable lives were precisely the executioners of the Albanian people, their servants and the informers. Attention was directed against others, who had not committed such crimes. The height of morality was reached when some profiteer took advantage of the sincerity of someone who himself explained how, in tragic circumstances, to save his brother from torture, who had been arrested, he was forced to sign an agreement to collaborate—and then not only refused to collaborate, but escaped, paying for it with his own brother’s blood. Such accounts would greatly help to cleanse and clear the Albanian conscience, but they were not told, because this transparency did not suit the real informers, those who eagerly committed this vileness and brought ruin upon thousands of people.
