By Nasi LERA The grim political atmosphere is keeping Albania—and the hopes of Albanians—in limbo, where the absence of alternatives that could offer a way out is accompanied by an unprincipled struggle among the various party factions. And despite the many labels attached to the motives behind this political hostility, the real meaning of this message has simply to do with grabbing the seats of power. It seems that the various pseudo-politicians have calculated this struggle quite well, because they know they will not be the ones to lose when personal interests are involved; but the one that will continue to suffer for some time yet will be our nation, the long-suffering people, and Albania. The hands that politicians are raising today to attempt an assassination of the future will undoubtedly one day receive their due punishment, but by then it will be too late for Ath[e?]un to recover its lost energies, because all of this is time wasted in the wind. None of us will be forgiven for remaining silent for so long in the face of political experiments, because the fate of the nation calls on us today to defend its trampled dignity. A few days ago I heard that in the district of Fier alone, one hundred thousand requests had been made to leave Albania, and I thought sadly that if all these people were able to leave, the city of Fier would be left deserted, and so too Tirana, Durrës, Vlora, Shkodra, or all of Albania. The vicious circle into which today’s big-headed pseudo-politicians are trying to push our nation is, in fact, a tragic trap, in the face of which each of us must raise our voice with all our strength. Extreme poverty, misery, and rising crime are being accompanied by a fight over seats of power among political leaders; and so our people cannot find even the slightest path to salvation, and are seeking escape. Of course, Albania, the blessed country to which our national renaissance writers sang with tears in their eyes, will undoubtedly one day be whole again. Neither the anti-Albanian mediocrities nor anyone else can prevent this. When that happens, we will all understand how much time we have wasted in artificial labyrinths, and we will not forgive ourselves for the silent stance we have taken. Let the pseudo-politicians fight windmills. We, the rest of us, must build Albania.
