“The Man Who Laughs” loses the prime minister’s path

By Arben ILIAZI All the socialists and the free men and the dervishes of the bureau and the armchairs, during this campaign, but also all the time, have tried to set Fatos Nano and Majko against each other, clothing each of them with features that are both social and anti-national. Some portrayed Nano as a man who thinks only about destroying the customs duties of Albanians. Others called Majko an “honest intellectual,” who with his stubbornness was introducing new values into Albanian society. But, according to the Albanian left, both of these figures were supposed to govern in any case. Others, in order to more forcefully demonstrate their right to fight conflict and to hold the next government, portrayed Fatos Nano as “reformed,” while Majko as the “new socialist” who, with his laughter, was losing the prime minister’s path. The absent Aliu and the socialist who can suddenly turn day into night seemed inclined to exploit, with his own thinking, every candidate placed at the top to replace one or the other. But the socialists, whether foolish or wise, seem determined to put an end to a backstage government that keeps the Albanian citizen wounded. If you ask why everyone is so eager to present these demonstrated characters, ultimately they may say that in a silent and incomprehensible prime minister they still seek a hope of returning to value. Majko perhaps understood that with his laughter he could reach somewhere other than where they wanted him. Thus, the parliamentary choice up to now was enough to mark Majko’s flourishing at the tables of the day. In this deceitful game, burdened with prejudices to the very end, the left majority never saw that it lost the prime minister’s path. Today, all that remains is to wait for what the government being drafted in the old offices will do. P. 2
