When the Mafias divide
By Ilir Aliaj
Yesterday Italy has once again come out calm, signing an agreement and the agreement with the Albanian state. But the agreement signed for the Albanians[?] even goes beyond the status of a plank, the hands of the clocks of the local government. After the signing, Italy assured that in the end it will withdraw the support it has extended for so long. But the Albanian government, revived by the deadline, is using this agreement as an ornament. This was the document that should have closed a wave of tiresome accusations, but beyond the facade the question remains: for whom will this calm be useful?
Such agreements, made hastily and presented as victories, have served more to postpone accountability than to bring it about. Instead of transparency we have grand words, instead of responsibility we have vague figures and unclear promises. When mafias divide, the citizen is always the last to be asked, while power takes care to preserve its own balances. In Albania, ironically, even the rhetoric of liberation from the government’s electoral zones sounds like yet another agreement to buy time. All of this, in the end, does not bring justice, only another silence, which will crack again tomorrow.
The parties of yesterday’s agreement have never found peace and, what is worse, it is clear that it is being used to stop the rightful surge. Participation in government, for the gain of government, is the same thing. The parties will calm one another with the hand of the state, and the government uses this kind of calm as a card in its deck. All this is happening today amid electoral fever, where promises are once again cheap goods. Politics that claims it can govern Albania without asking the citizen ends up bargaining with the powerful, not with the public. In this game, the sense of the state and responsibility toward people’s lives is lost once again. In the end, the only identity card of this agreement is silence, not peace.
