By Ilir BUSHI The anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall reminds us Albanians that, precisely at historic moments when we had the opportunity to tear down the barriers of a regressive mentality within our consciousness, the opposite happened. Suddenly, in a strange way, and without even our own new [unclear], we found ourselves surrounded by a great Chinese wall that must be demolished immediately. Ten years lost in the experimental labyrinths of pseudo-politics are sufficient grounds to be convinced that our silence in the face of pseudo-politicians’ amateurism is unforgivable. While modern Europe built bridges of goodwill and understanding during these years, we Albanians blew up factories and industrial plants, paved roads and children’s schools, so that everything good could be brought down to the lowest levels of social life. Crime and smuggling, corruption and [unclear] on an astonishing scale increased in Albania. In our country, the talent for exploiting bridges became an anti-national strategy of those in power, which betrayed and abandoned the nation’s interests, chasing portfolios and armchairs. Meanwhile, Kosovo, left outside the borders of the homeland, reminds us every day that without uniting the borders there will be no peace on either side. The government circles themselves, with the artificial obstacles created by the taxes they impose on Kosovars who want to leave Albania for Kosovo, have forced them to travel via Igumenica. And while the leaders of the ruling party have travelled to Paris to secure full membership rights, they are at the same time distancing Albania ever further from European structures. Having reduced the economy, public order, tourism, industry and all the other indicators to catastrophic figures, they now comically rush to European fashion shops to try on the latest-style suits, so they can appear at balls. Shakespeare might have put it this way: “Before the funeral tears have dried, wedding toasts are being raised.” But the Albanian pseudo-politicians, these visitors from the Middle Ages who have outlived the twentieth century, do not care about the future fate of our nation. So why should we remain silent and feel sorry for the merciless, who have done nothing good for Albania?
