Interview P. 5
Albania condemned to darkness
A minister of the relevant sector, asked yesterday about the state of flooding in Albania, replied that he had no information because the telephone was not working.
And when we told him he could find out from the radio news, he replied candidly that “there is no correspondent, so I haven't heard anything.” So exactly what was expected has happened. Albania has been condemned to total darkness and an entire winter of it. But the Albanian Government, caught up in the festivities and drunk on champagne, found out about it and “discovered” the light only after the people had worked out everything, even the number of burned-out transformers. Playing dumb, Prime Minister Meta, with the power of his man from sleep [sic], has gone after the KESH structures, to give the impression that the corrupt will no longer be tolerated. But before the story of electricity has even ended, Albania faces another danger: flooding. Meanwhile, the Government will wait for the rains to stop before reviewing the situation with the sewerage and drainage systems. In Lezhë and Durrës, the depth of the Adriatic coast was considered a small detail compared with the depth of the lakes formed in the streets, where it is absolutely impossible to get through on foot. And yet, in most of the country's towns, drinking water has not flowed for 4–5 days. Thus the “fate” of Albanians, who at the start of this winter were blessed with a new government of continuity, is disappointing even the most optimistic, because the actual situation in the country is sliding toward deterioration. Faced with this miserable situation, the consolation that “it could be worse” helps no one, but only reminds us that we are virtually powerless to protect ourselves from evil. Apparently, in the real fight against evil, those in power have lined up against their own people, deepening smuggling, corruption and indifference, regardless of the demagoguery they use. But all of this still seems far too little. Tomorrow brings further challenging developments, which will undoubtedly find the state apparatus unprepared; its shoulders will emerge from the alcohol and champagne only after the people have been cruelly victimized.
