Corruption, a government phenomenon

Declaration of the Presidium of the Republican Party The official position of the republicans Our position considers the decision of the governing acts and the abusive acts undertaken to dismantle the General Prosecutor’s Office as a serious anti-democratic act that strikes at and shakes the foundations of the creation of the democratic state. This constitutes a clear exposure of the efforts of the forces that today lead the parliamentary majority and the Government to bring all independent institutions and the Albanian justice system under control. This unprecedented action by the governing majority not only runs contrary to the Constitution and the laws of the country, but also represents an attempt to legitimize the deformation of the state through the installation of the mechanisms of a corrupt, arbitrary and irresponsible regime. In our view, corruption today constitutes a government phenomenon and not merely a series of isolated cases. It appears in many forms: in manipulated tenders, in the misuse of public funds, in the capture of the administration, in the use of the police and justice for political interests, as well as in the attempt to silence critical voices. For this reason, we strongly denounce this climate and call on public opinion and political actors to react. Only the restoration of the rule of law, respect for institutions and the punishment of corruption can create citizens’ trust in the country’s democratic future. See p. 3
