Clinton touches Kosovo’s wounds

By Ilir Bushi The road to Prishtinë is lined with photographs from demonstrations by Kosovo Albanians, in front of the Serbian Presidency in Beograd. They bear witness to the moment when the unspeakable horror of massacres and monstrous violence took place. In the capital of Kosovo, the traces of war, of the ruins, with a force that makes people ask painfully of anyone who passes by, and especially the visible heavy debris, escape the reporter’s eye. The road to Prishtinë is lined with photographs from demonstrations by Kosovo Albanians, in front of the Serbian Presidency in Beograd. They bear witness to the moment when the unspeakable horror of massacres and monstrous violence took place. In the capital of Kosovo, the traces of war, of the ruins, with a force that makes people ask painfully of anyone who passes by, and especially the visible heavy debris. Above them, the first hours and days of Kosovo, here the wounds of man crackle in the yellowed skies. There is a crowd of people, a frightened crowd that has come out to see them, the special ones above them. Can one still see the man who was killed, just this morning? Why must they be sought in Prishtinë and other flattened cities? Where do they sleep in their ruins, and under what conditions? Or do they seek to leave in order to be somewhere else, in a hopeless settlement? Clinton, upon arriving, said clearly with emotion that we cannot let it fall, flattened and bleak, into annihilation, a city of madness and war. And demonime[?] they sit in worship before the President’s power with human warmth. Clinton will make a new Kosovo, Bushi told television journalists. The crowd, hopes and anxiety, three times in a row will tremble and fade before Clinton’s figure, to say that his peaceful conduct, without marking any disturbing or violent action, in fact suits even more the mission of a god of Kosovo’s liberation. What Kosovars feel in such a peace, no one can describe more clearly than those faces and tears trembling with joy. Clinton threw aside joy and the bombings, for the idea, but at the same time he asked with his own eyes how cities like Sllatinë, Fushë-Kosovë, Ferizaj, Suharekë, Prishtinë, Mitrovicë and Gjakovë are alive. Kosovars told him the dark stories of killings, masked men, burnings and crimes. The American president, before the Presid[...] at the Skopje time. He had the opportunity to talk with the new authorities in Prishtinë, while earlier he was in several other cities of Kosovo, where he briefly avoided the official reception. He touched up close the wounds of Prishtinë, of Kosovo. Clinton had places from the living and the fresh swallowed up by what he is to resemble. For hours on end he will meet citizens who still suffer new operational and scenarios of Serbian forces. Clinton confirms, for three hours, that he is not only making a visit, but is also sending a clear message that America will not leave Kosovo empty. For the Albanians of Kosovo, Clinton will be a recognition and especially the one who saved their lives. For the Serbs and others, he will mean that in a free and democratic Kosovo there will be no place for any new violence. For every citizen of Kosovo, who has been wounded by the war, he remains a symbol of hope for a better future. Welcome, President Clinton, into the tragedy and hope of the Albanians of Kosovo. In the name of all Albanians and of our nation, we await you with tears of joy, with respect, from generation to generation.
