DP: A different platform unveiled

The reformers at the blue headquarters unveil their platform, entitled “For a Successful DP, For a DP of the New Century.” The much-discussed meeting in the final week of Albanian politics has reaffirmed the support that the DP's moderate group truly enjoys among the wider membership of the Democrats, as well as within the grassroots leadership structures. Criticism, self-criticism, and also a flood of accusations directed at the current leadership of the blue headquarters formed the arena of debate among those present in the hall. Former Democratic deputy leader Genc Pollo and his supporters in the Parliamentary Group, Dëmi, Xhaferi, Vejsiu, Shehu, were applauded as they entered the hall of the Opera and Ballet Theatre. INVITATION TO COOPERATION

For Albania, 1999 was a year of successive failures in the governance of the “Alliance for the State” coalition. During this year, the inability of the left-wing majority to hold on to power and to fulfill its commitments to stabilize the country's social, economic and political situation was demonstrated. Through its direct participation in Albanian political life, the Republican Party has repeatedly observed, with concern, that during the two years of left-wing government, the country has not only failed to move toward stability, but poverty has deepened, the mafia has taken on a state character, and Albanians are losing hope for the future day by day. This government not only failed to contribute to establishing public order, but became an overt accomplice both in organized crime in general and in economic crime in particular. The Albanian crisis manifested itself both in the repeated changes of government and in the complete lack of state control over such phenomena as tax evasion, public order, and corruption.
