PICKERING: FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION!

Prime Minister Ilir Meta met on Saturday afternoon with U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Thomas Pickering. Under Secretary Pickering, emphasizing strong support for the Albanian government and its priorities, noted that the United States is and will continue to be a great ally of Albania and the Albanians. He stressed that the work being done to structure and ensure the functioning of the police and judiciary is one of the foundations for consolidating the institutions of the Albanian state. “In this context, the fight against corruption is also a very important step, which must be further intensified, as this would make possible the full support of the United States,” Pickering said. He described the local election process as a very important test, since its successful completion is essential to consolidating democracy in Albania. He said that lifting sanctions against Serbia would benefit Millosheviq. He also stressed that the way Albania treats minorities sets an example that all the countries in the region should follow. Pickering also met with President Meidani last night.
