Italian investors involved in defrauding Albanians with fake visas are being investigated these days by the Bari Prosecutor’s Office Five officials of the Italian Embassy in Albania have been placed under investigation by the Bari Prosecutor’s Office in Italy. They are charged with issuing fake visas to Albanian citizens wishing to cross the Adriatic. Along with the five Embassy officials, five Italian investors working in Albania are also under accusation. These details confirm the major scandal involving visas forged at the Italian Embassy. Several ordinary Albanian forgers have been wrongly accused; they were “the last on the blacklist” when it came to issuing forged visas. According to the indictment, 1,500 forged visas were issued through this scheme, while all the procedures for issuing a visa to Italy were violated. No less than 1,500 dollars was paid for each visa, a sum that weighed heavily on Albanians and enriched employees of the Italian Embassy. Some of these visas were for a single entry. This was done so that the visas would expire as quickly as possible, keeping the black market in fake visas constantly alive. P. 2

Tension has flared again among Albanian emigrants at the Kakavijë border crossing. For two days, since Tuesday, the Greek authorities have been turning Albanian citizens back and invalidating their valid visas issued by the Gjirokastër Consulate. By yesterday at midday, the number of visas invalidated had reached 100, while the Greek customs authorities’ justification was very absurd. According to them, the amount of money an Albanian must have available to enter Greece has risen from 35,000 drachmas, as stipulated in the relevant procedures, to 200,000 drachmas. P. 7
