HEAD OF EDU DELEGATION: DEMOCRATS, UNITE!

The delegation of the European Right has observed criticism and fierce clashes within the PD, the sister party of EDU member parties. After making contact with all the key figures representing the different currents within the PD, the delegation concluded that this party has a great deal of work to do to democratize its internal party life. This “bombshell” statement for the PD’s official line has made very clear the “sincerity” shown by the parties during their meetings with the European Right. They also advised the PD leaders that the party should be inclusive, democratic and tolerant. P. 5

KUKËS, NOMINATION FOR THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

The city of Kukës is vying to receive the Nobel Prize. The northeastern Albanian city has been put forward as a candidate for the world’s most prestigious award. The initiative came from Prime Minister Ilir Meta himself, who proposed it to the Norwegian Institute for the peace prize in question. The head of the Albanian Government considered it appropriate for this city to be one of the leading contenders for the Nobel Peace Prize. During the Kosovo crisis, Kukës bore the heaviest burden. From the beginning of the crisis until its end, more than 450,000 Kosovars who had been forcibly displaced by Serbian repression were sheltered, fed and cared for in this city. P. 5

DIPLOMAS AND JOBS FOR PRISONERS

TIRANA: New regulations for Albanian prisoners. Prime Minister Meta has in his hands these days the new prison regulations, drafted by the Codification Directorate at the Ministry of Justice. They contain 105 articles covering all the duties and rights of prisoners. These regulations will serve as a “constitution” for prison employees and managers. According to the spokesperson for this ministry, Agim Neza, the regulations will be modern and will treat prisoners in accordance with the European Charter of Human Rights. The new regulations provide for highly favorable conditions for prisoners serving sentences in Albania’s 7 prisons. P. 6
