Former Prime Minister Pandeli Majko has supported the idea of finding a path to compromise between the Albanian government and opposition regarding the electoral process and the preparation of the law for it. He has warned the ruling majority that it must take into account the objections raised by the opposition to the electoral law. Next week will elect the People’s Advocate. The election of this advocate is one of the matters expected to be considered in the coming days during the plenary sessions of Parliament, along with the approval of Parliament’s two-week work schedule. The subject of the People’s Advocate, who will soon become an institution, was also discussed earlier at an expanded meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Laws, Civil Society, Non-Governmental Organizations, and MPs. The proposed candidates introduced themselves before their candidacies were reviewed in Parliament. P. 2

The Criminal Police, together with the other more specialized sectors of the Ministry of Public Order, have recorded their first success after more than two months of operational investigations into the existence of an Italian-Albanian mafia network. Crimes committed in Albania, mainly those of a mafia nature or of an economic-financial nature, have been at the center of Minister Poçi’s attention and that of his subordinates. Cooperation between a group of Albanian and Italian individuals has given mafia crime in Albania a clear advantage, resulting in high-profile arrests not only in Albania but also in Italy. P. 2

Ceka Abandoned, a Flirt with Beqiri

Valentine’s Day did not help the co-leaders of the governing coalition put an end to their disagreements. The meeting of the coalition’s political parties, held expressly on February 14, Valentine’s Day, transformed the romantic atmosphere of the day into hostility and division among them. PS Chairman Fatos Nano refused to spend the day with his PAD partner, who had been sent to the meeting. The Socialists took the opportunity to flirt with another party, that of National Unity. Idajet Beqiri, chairman of PUK, took the place of the alliance members at the meeting. After its ongoing conflicts with its largest partner in government, PAD is now sailing in waters outside the boundaries of the governing coalition. And while it has been abandoned, the dominant forces in government have immediately put forward the new candidate who will take the place of PAD’s cooled-off position in the five-party governing arrangement.
