EDITORIAL By Enkel DEMI There is one day a year when we remember them. One day a year when we teach them to recite poems for us. One day a year when we buy them presents and become generous with the beggars in the street. But it is only one day a year. The rest of the time we get on with our own business, driving away wretched children who beg, poor children who sell cigarettes, reading news about organ trafficking and paedophilia, raising an entire generation that swallows speeches instead of fairy tales. We see children embracing political leaders on platforms and keep silent. We see children at the front line of protests and keep silent. We see them boarding speedboats, drowning, being blown up by mines, using guns and grenades, picking pockets, and in the evening we take the money they bring us. Children in this country are already capable of supporting families, doing all the dirty work in the world, but they do not go to school. Albania is among the leading countries in the world for illiteracy, school non-attendance and banditry. It is not hard to reach the conclusion that it will remain in first place in the future, because this is how these children are growing up. Today, naive creatures; tomorrow, a potential danger, a prison population. Educational and upbringing policies are the Albanian government’s lowest priorities. Those in power are sowing and consolidating a flock of ignoramuses, although today they will gladly listen to a concert of optimistic songs about life. Organizations working with children are utter failures, unknown, aggressive magnets for donations. Today is their day. It is precisely the best day to remember the mafia that makes profits in their homes, adoptions, transplanted organs, the unfortunate. It would not be a bad idea to do this before wishing them, as always, “Happy June 1st,” and saying see you, God willing, next year.
